Conservative Leaders Echo Tea Party Support for Immigration Reform

From our friends at The LIBRE Initiative, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and Liberty Counsel:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday the Partnership for a New American Economy, Americans for Tax Reform and the Tea Party Express released a poll showing strong support for immigration reform among Republican primary voters who identify with the Tea Party.

Among respondents, “70 percent support a plan that provides legal status or U.S. citizenship for undocumented immigrants who pay penalties, pay back taxes, pass a criminal background check, and learn English and American civics,” and 71 percent want Congress to take action this year.

Today, conservative leaders are bolstering this support.

“This new national poll confirms what we’ve known all along — Americans of all types and ideologies support immigration reform. While opponents at times seem the most vocal, they’re a small minority,” said Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative.

“Conservatives recognize the important contribution immigrants have made to building the greatest country the world has ever known,” Garza continued. “Millions have fled repression for a better life here in America, where hard work and discipline have always been the key to success — and where everyone can create and fulfill the American Dream. It’s no surprise that people who value entrepreneurship, hard work, and fiscal responsibility also see how important it is to help today’s immigrants succeed as well.”

“The NHCLC applauds the courageous decision of the Tea Party Express in endorsing immigration reform,” added Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. “Tea Party advocates concerned with the size of government understand that legalization without amnesty serves as an antidote to broken families, poverty and multi-generational dependency on government. This development should serve as the proverbial tipping point for House Republicans to act now and pass immigration reform.”

“I applaud the Tea Party Express for endorsing immigration reform. Immigration reform is urgently needed and is in the best interest of all Americans,” said Mathew Staver, Chairman of the Liberty Counsel and Dean of the Liberty University Law School. “This is not a Republican or Democratic idea. This is American. We cannot wait. We must fix our broken system.”
